After wandering from Spain's Museo das Pereginacions through a range of European exhibits, 1000 pilgrims' shoes have found both eternal rest and new life in a six-metre-high altar in Norway's Gulset Church.
The mouth-blown glass shoes themselves form artist Borgny Svalastog's dramatic 'Pilgrim's Journey', an imposing Latin cross and altar backdrdop that flows into a glass 'river of life'.
Lighting designer Mathias Andersson wanted to optimize the colours and to ensure that full focus was on the art, not the wall.
Working with Kim Hughes of AVAB, he used Roblon Avant-Garde and Mini Downlight fittings to light the shoes from within sheer glass cases.
Remote light generators mean the cases never have to be opened again. This protects the integrity of both the art and the lighting design.
The integrity of both was already made clear the day the lighting was switched on.
"When we lit the shoes for the first time, the glass started to light up in a euphoric way," recalls Mathias Andersson. "The artist started crying. It was a wonderful moment."
