drops in on old London town
At the 220-seater Sophie's Steakhouse Restaurant in London's Covent Garden, light droplets cast a uniform footprint of welcoming light on each table.
Lighting designer Kate Wilkins worked with Light Projects in London and Roblon R&D in Denmark to create the effect.
Fibre optic tails were integrated into acrylic droplet fittings that were especially designed and made for the project by Roblon.
Different lighting schemes are programmed in to the customized control system. With the colour warming as it dims, the transition from day to night lighting is seamless and natural.
Kate Wilkins' overall concept was for simple, contemporary lighting in keeping with the fashionable eatery's honest, no-frills food and its industrial-chic look.
She even gave traditional lighting a literal industrial-chic twist when she designed the showpiece chandeliers. Two metres in diameter, they were created by weaving sideglow fibre optics around good old-fashioned used bulbs.
